The Fabulous Picture Show hosts “The Pied Piper of Hützovina” + Q&A session
You are invited to participate in the open-debate film programme, The Fabulous Picture Show, which offers a fresh perspective on cutting-edge feature films from around the world, and is broadcast on Al Jazeera English.
On 26th January we will screen “The Pied Piper of Hutzovina”, an intimate documentary road-trip across Eastern Europe in search of love, inspiration and gypsy music.
In the summer of 2004, on a car journey in Eastern Europe, Pavla Fleisher met and fell in love with Eugene Hutz, lead singer of the New York-based Gypsy Punk band Gogol Bordello. Captivated by his energy and musical verve, and desperate to get to know him better, she decided to make a film about him. The Pied Piper of Hützovina follows Eugene and Pavla on their subsequent road trip through Eugene’s home country, Ukraine. It is the story of two people traveling together on two very different courses. Her aim is to rediscover a forgotten romance; his is to rediscover his roots. She hopes to find love on the road; he hopes to find musical inspiration from the gypsy culture he is determined to preserve. This is an intimate portrait of a filmmaker with a passion for her subject, and a punk musician with a longing to revisit his past. Theirs is a journey which tests their relationship and challenges their perceptions of the music they both love.
After the screening of “The Pied Piper of Hützovina” audience members will be able to debate with director Pavla Fleisher and Eugene Hutz in a Q&A, hosted by journalist Amanda Palmer, presenter of The Fabulous Picture Show. The event, including refreshments, is free of charge but spaces are limited so get your request for tickets in early. Please include a phone number in your reply so we can contact you. “The Pied Piper of Hützovina” is screened at the Everyman Cinema on Friday 26thth January, audience members must arrive by 12pm midday and the event will end around 4pm. The whole event will be filmed for The Fabulous Picture Show on Al Jazeera English and your presence will be taken as permission to use your image and contributions in the programme and on Al Jazeera English.
