A Gentle Creature, sometimes translated into the less favourable ‘The Meek One’ takes its inspiration from the short story by prolific Russian author Dostoyevsky, famed for his exploration of the human psyche.
Our protagonist, however, is far from meek – Vasikina Makovtseva plays a nameless woman who takes us on a journey to find her husband who has fallen through the cracks of a brutal incarceration system, reflective of a society that has no energy left to care. There begins the story of a battle against the prison where the forces of social evil are constantly at work.
Nominated for The Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, A Gentle Creature was the talk of the festival circuit, and it’s easy to see why.
