Adapted from Ian McEwan’s bestselling novel, On Chesil Beach centres on the relationship of a seemingly mismatched couple in the summer of 1962. Florence (Ronan) is a talented classical musician from a well-to-do family; Edward (Howle) is the clever young man from altogether humbler origins. We follow the pair through their idyllic courtship, exploring sex and the societal pressure that can accompany physical intimacy, which leads to their fateful wedding night. Transferring the subtle English sadness that pervades the novel to the silver screen, the film is directed with meticulous care and attention by Dominic Cooke.
We're pleased to have director Dominic Cooke joining us at Everyman Belsize park for a live Q&A following the screening.
