Sam Raimi’s gleefully gory Evil Dead canon is reawakened from its ancient slumber as director Lee Cronin relocates from the woods to Los Angeles. Here, estranged sisters Beth (Lily Sullivan) and Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) have come with kids in tow to heal family scars, a task complicated when the dead crash their reunion. Newcomers Sullivan and Sutherland deliver brilliantly unhinged performances giving human stakes as mischievous demons raise hell, decapitating and disfiguring with total disregard for house rules. This fifth film in the franchise honours the carnage-fuelled spirit of its origin story delivering blood-splattered fan service and twisted new ideas. Both personal demons and literal demons run amok and there is no shortage of moments to send squeamish viewers cowering under their chairs.
