There are 80,000 native Irish speakers in Ireland. 5,000 live in the North of Ireland. Three of them became rappers. This comedy-drama film depicts the story of the rise of the West Belfast-based hip-hop trio, Kneecap, via a true-life rock n' roll fable.
When fate brings music teacher JJ (DJ Próvai) into the orbit of self-confessed "lowlife scum" Naoise (Naoise Ó Cairealláin) and Liam Óg (Liam Ó Hannaidh) they discover a hip-hop idea like no other, rapping in their native Irish language.
After creating music during a drug-fuelled recording session, their music begins to draw crowds. The trio start an unlikely movement to save their mother tongue, and ignite the language's resurgence through music. But they must first overcome police, paramilitaries and politicians trying to silence their defiant sound -- whilst their anarchic approach to life often makes them their own worst enemies.
The film stars the band members of KNEECAP as themselves, alongside Michael Fassbender, Josie Walker, and Simone Kirby.
