My Old Ass offers a refreshingly quirky take on the coming-of-age genre. Elliott Labrant (Maisy Stella), a carefree 18-year-old ready to leave her small-town life behind, spends her last summer before college getting high and dodging family obligations in the scenic Muskoka Lakes of Ontario. But things take an unexpected turn during her 18th birthday mushroom trip when she meets her 39-year-old future self (Aubrey Plaza), who’s full of biting humor and cryptic life advice.
As Elliott navigates this surreal encounter, she’s forced to rethink her carefree attitude toward life, love, and her future. Director Megan Park brings humor and heart to the story, blending Elliott’s youthful recklessness with the grounded wisdom of her older self. Maisy Stella shines in her feature film debut, while Plaza’s dry wit and emotional range elevate the film’s most poignant moments.
