Sam Mendes directs Olivia Colman as Hilary, manager of a seaside cinema whose mental health matches the cinema building. Both are crumbling. A new hire, a young Black man (Michael Ward), eases her loneliness, even as he battles through the racism of 1980s Margate.
The quiet joys of running a cinema are brought to life with help from co-stars Colin Firth and Toby Jones. Their chalk-and-cheese personas add levity to a deeper theme of the suffering people experience, privately in their heads and at the hands of bigots.
