When one of them decides to venture into the dark heart of the mainland, he soon discovers a mutation that has spread to not only the infected, but other survivors as well.

What you need to know...

28 Years Later sees the return of the Rage virus, and the world still isn't ready. Nearly thirty years after 28 Days Later redefined zombie horror, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are back with a new chapter: the first film in a trilogy exploring what happens after society collapses under the weight of infection and fear.

Set nearly three decades after the original outbreak, the story centres on a group of survivors living on a remote island, connected to the mainland by a single, fortified causeway. When a father and his son venture across to investigate what remains, they’re met with a world full of unexpected beauty and lurking danger.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson leads the cast as Jamie, a resourceful scavenger. Jodie Comer plays Isla, a woman grappling with memory loss, and Alfie Williams stars as their son, Spike. They’re joined by Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Kelson, one of the outbreak’s earliest survivors, and Jack O’Connell as Sir Jimmy Crystal, a cult leader with a mysterious past.

Filming took place across Northern England, with locations including Holy Island (Lindisfarne), Hexham, Kielder Forest, and Fountains Abbey. In a nod to the raw style of 28 Days Later, the filmmakers used a mix of digital and consumer tech including footage shot on the iPhone 15 Pro Max to capture that gritty, handheld feel.

Although 28 Years Later doesn’t follow directly from 28 Weeks Later, it acknowledges the events of both earlier films and builds on their legacy with a sharper political and environmental focus. The Rage virus has evolved too and early glimpses reveal a terrifying new type of infected: faster, smarter, and disturbingly strategic.

With Garland signed on to write two more sequels, 28 Years Later kicks off a bold new trilogy, aiming to set a new benchmark for the viral apocalypse genre.

The trailer features a chilling audio clip of Rudyard Kipling’s 1903 poem Boots, recited by actor Taylor Holmes in a 1915 recording. The relentless, rhythmic delivery underscores the film’s grim themes drawing a powerful link between the traumas of war and the slow march of societal collapse.
