The Holdovers

2h 14m
strong language, brief nudity
In "The Holdovers," directed by Alexander Payne, Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), an unpopular history teacher at Barton Academy, begrudgingly stays on campus over the 1970 Christmas break to supervise students unable to go home. Among the remaining few is Angus (Dominic Sessa), a 15-year-old troublemaker with academic potential. The unlikely trio is completed by Mary (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), the school's head cook, mourning the loss of her son in Vietnam. Despite initial animosity, the three form an unconventional Christmas family, navigating misadventures amidst the snowy landscapes of New England. As they confront their individual pasts, the bond strengthens, and they realize the power to shape their futures isn't confined by their histories. The Holdovers is a heartwarming comedy-drama about unexpected connections and the transformative nature of shared experiences.
