Never trust a saviour with a spray tan.

Twenty-five years after Tom Cruise first became a fan of his work on Amores Perros, he finally teams up with two-time Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu for Digger, arriving at Everyman on 2 October 2026. Billed as "a comedy of catastrophic proportions," it marks Iñárritu's first English-language feature since The Revenant, and the results look every bit as audacious.

Cruise disappears almost entirely into Digger Rockwell, a swaggering oil tycoon and, by his own estimation, the most powerful man on the planet. When a disaster of his own making threatens to destroy everything, Digger launches a frantic, ego-driven campaign to convince the world he's actually humanity's saviour rather than its downfall.

John Goodman plays an ailing US president leaning on Digger to clean up the mess, with Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, Emma D'Arcy and Burn Gorman rounding out the chaos.

Written by Iñárritu alongside Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Nicolás Giacobone, the film reunites the director with cinematographer Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, his long-time collaborator on Birdman, Bardo and The Revenant. The pair shot the whole film on vintage VistaVision cameras built in 1954, using new ultra-wide lenses designed specifically for the production at Pinewood Studios. Expect a queasy, oversized satire that skewers power and vanity in equal measure, anchored by a Cruise performance you'll spend half the runtime trying to recognise.

To transform into Digger Rockwell, Cruise underwent one of his most extensive physical transformations in decades, using facial and body prosthetics, a thinning white hairpiece and a Southern drawl to vanish into the role. It's said to be his heaviest makeup job since playing Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder.
