What you need to know...

A killer mystery lands at Everyman.

Adapted from Richard Osman’s record-breaking debut novel, The Thursday Murder Club brings murder, mayhem, and a touch of mischief to the big screen.

Set in the deceptively peaceful Coopers Chase retirement village, the story follows four sharp-minded residents who meet weekly to crack cold cases over biscuits and tea. But when a fresh murder rocks their quiet community, the gang suddenly find themselves at the centre of a very real, very messy investigation.

Step forward: Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), the former spy with a Rolodex of secrets; Ron (Pierce Brosnan), the ex-union man with fists of fury; Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley), the ever-cautious psychiatrist; and Joyce (Celia Imrie), whose chatty diary might just be the most dangerous weapon of all.

Directed by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, Mrs Doubtfire), this is Agatha Christie for the modern age,  razor-sharp, laugh-out-loud funny, and emotionally pitch-perfect. And with Steven Spielberg on board as producer, it’s every bit as slick and cinematic as you'd hope.

Backing the big four is a who's-who of British talent: David Tennant as shady property mogul Ian Ventham, Daniel Mays and Naomi Ackie as the overwhelmed local detectives, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Geoff Bell, and Richard E. Grant in scene-stealing supporting roles. Even the stately home that plays Coopers Chase deserves an award.

The film stays faithful to Osman’s bestselling novel, but Columbus injects it with real momentum, balancing mystery, heart, and plenty of sly, character-driven comedy. Expect diary confessions, hallway stakeouts, buried secrets, and one suspicious jigsaw puzzle.

Whether you're in it for the twisty whodunit, the golden-era cast, or the joy of watching pensioners outwit professionals, The Thursday Murder Club is this summer’s most charming crime caper.
