F1® The Movie

2h 35m
Dubbed “the greatest that never was,” Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was FORMULA 1’s most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling FORMULA 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to FORMULA 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He’ll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team's hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny’s past catches up with him and he finds that in FORMULA 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition—and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone.

What you need to know...

Brad Pitt steps into the driver’s seat for F1, a high-octane racing drama that brings the intensity of Formula 1 to the big screen like never before. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), this immersive sports thriller combines real F1 race footage, practical stunt driving, and behind-the-scenes access to the sport’s most iconic teams and circuits.

Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a former Formula 1 driver who returns to the grid after years away from the sport. Tasked with mentoring a young and rising talent (played by Damson Idris), Hayes must prove he can still compete at the highest level — all while navigating the politics, rivalries, and unforgiving pace of modern F1 racing. As the season unfolds, the stakes mount on and off the track, leading to a climactic showdown where experience and instinct are tested against raw speed and ambition.

What sets F1 apart is its unprecedented level of authenticity. Filmed during real Formula 1 Grand Prix weekends across circuits like Silverstone, Spa, Monza, and Suzuka, the movie features actual race cars, pit crews, and fans in the background. Pitt trained for months to handle an adapted F2 car, performing many of the driving sequences himself. The production team — working in close collaboration with the FIA and F1 teams — even created a fictional 11th team, APXGP, complete with its own livery and garage presence during race weekends.

FBehind the camera, Kosinski reteams with cinematographer Claudio Miranda (Life of Pi, Oblivion) to deliver kinetic, hyper-real visuals. In partnership with F1’s own technical teams, the film incorporates never-before-seen camera angles, including cockpit-mounted rigs and drone sequences that place viewers directly into the heart of the action. The sound design is equally visceral, capturing the thunderous roar of the engines and the nerve-wracking tension of a close-fought battle for pole.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton, F1 blends sports drama with a character study of legacy, risk, and redemption. The ensemble cast includes Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem, adding weight to the off-track drama as team owners, engineers, and media handlers each play their part in the high-stakes world of elite motorsport.

Arriving at Everyman screens on June 25th, the film has already generated buzz among both cinephiles and racing fans. With the success of Drive to Survive expanding the sport’s audience worldwide, F1 looks to capitalise on that momentum while offering something more visceral, cinematic, and emotionally grounded.

Whether you're a lifelong Formula 1 fan or coming in fresh, this is a front-row ticket to one of the fastest and most dangerous sports on the planet — led by a Hollywood icon who proves he's still got plenty of gas in the tank.

Did you know?

Although Brad Pitt is behind the wheel, he isn’t driving actual F1 cars. Instead, he drives modified F2 cars, enhanced by Mercedes with F1-style components such as a front nose, rear wings, and side pods.
